Crossy Road debuted back in 2014 and attracted a lot of attention in the first months after the initial release.

A couple of years later it still prospers basking in the love of its numerous fan base (more than 100 million installs) and having a new publisher: Disney.

What’s the mysterious recipe for such a smashing success?

I don’t know… Is it Minecraftish? Again?

Well, I guess it can’t be helped: we live in a Minecraft era after all. We have a blocky and pixelated art style reminiscent of both the biggest sandbox game and old-school 8-bit arcades/platformers.

These visuals are quite eye-catching, friendly and cute. You have cuboid trees, grassy hills, icebergs, elephants, tiny adorable cars and trains etc. It’s hard to name everything since there’s an inexhaustible plethora of thematic locations.

All that pixilated hustle & bustle is accompanied by catchy cheap-tune music with easily recognizable melodies taken from the biggest Disney’s blockbusters: from Lion King and Lilo & Stitch to Zootopia.

The core of the Crossy Road – 10/10

Crossy Road pays homage to a legendary, classic game Frogger which was released back in 1981. Somewhere in the world, a silent nostalgic tear was just cried…

Your mission is to get the character you play safely through a series of obstacles – a busy rush hour road, a jungle stampede, drifting arctic ice and so forth.

Now the variety of characters, which you unlock one by one, is sensational: more than one hundred. Here are some of the cartoons that kindly provided their heroes to the game:

  • Mickey Mouse & Friends – Goofy, Donald, Mickey.
  • Wreck-It Ralph – Felix, Vanellope.
  • The Haunted Mansion – Gargoyle.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean – Jack Sparrow, Marty.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas – Jack Skellington.

And many others.

Each character belongs to a certain class varying from Classic to Legendary, therefore the most famous and beloved heroes are harder to unlock. There’s even Darkwing Duck from a retro TV-cartoon of the same name – rejoice the humankind!

In case you’re too impatient, heroes can be bought starting at $0.99 for Classic ones to $4.99 for Legendary ones.

As for the settings – there are 9 levels in total (so far) which technically have no ending. So I guess a more suitable word would be “world”.

They include:

  • Mickey & Friends – a road with insane trafficking.
  • The Lion King – hot savannah and crazy elephants.
  • Toy Story – something similar to a toy factory.
  • The Haunted Mansion – a spooky setting crawling with ghosts.
  • Zootopia – that adorable city with talking furry creatures.

And so on.

While playing you have to score as many points as possible – they are the in-game currency which allows you to buy new characters from a gumball machine-like device. In case you get a duplicate hero (two Mickeys) one of them can be exchanged for pixels – another type of currency that allows you to buy another hero from the same price league.

Remember: if you haven’t used a certain character for a long period he/she can be “confiscated” from you by an evil creature from the world that they both belong to. For example in Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s Kraken with his appalling tentacles.

Controls – 10/10

The controls of Crossy Road aren’t a challenge to master: it’s basic swiping/tapping and nothing more.

What you should really worry about is keeping your attention focused, while helping a tiny figurine cross the road – the game tempo is pretty energetic.

The Sentence

Crossy Road has its own inimitable charm: 8-bit art style, zany and beloved characters and hours of addictive gameplay. And believe me: you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it.
